Unicorns, Vanilla, and Friends

We have a LOT of young mother's as clients and the most regularly discussed upon topic for their 1-year-old's birthdays is whether to have a party or not. They love their little heroes, and want to spoil them rotten, but having one might not be the smartest thing to do for one who won't even be able to tell the colour of their brightly-coloured cake whilst the "no-party" option would deem them mums-from-hell.

So, together with our sister company Kawan Kawan Pictures, we have come up with the perfect solution for your mummy dilemma.

The idea is simple: have a mock party and have it photographed!

Yes, you heard us right, mock party.

So whether you're thinking of a Pokemon-themed birthday party for your little ones or an intimate picnic party for a couple's shoot, THIS is an offer you won't want to miss.

All you have to do is to let us know what your theme is, and we'll do the rest for you!

It really is, that simple.

All additional details are on this poster:

Now, excuse us please while we bite into a toffee macaron.

Sweetness.

Eid-ul-Fitr Promo

It's that celebratory time again, folks! The team at Unicorns and Vanilla wishes you a very merry, happy Eid-ul-Fitr! And to make it even sweeter, we have come up with the following promotion, just for you, our beloved friends and family:

Our cookies for lack of a better name suited for it, is called The Large Chewy simply because they are huge at approximately 4 inches in diameter of gooey chocolate chips, deep caressing vanilla flavour and salty butter goodness! Our normal price for these bad-ass yumsters are RM 2.50 each, but are now selling for RM 2 each.

Our macaronnage has begun and it's an adventure we wouldn't want to go on alone! There are a variety of flavours and combinations to choose from, and they go at RM 2.70 each at a size of approximately 1-1.5 inches in diameter. Wowzers!

Also, home-made is the new store-bought and at Unicorns and Vanilla we prefer food made from the heart, with love! Oreo cookies are a heaven to have at home and at RM 10 per 100g, you'll be begging for more! No preservatives, no artificial colourings or flavourings, these cookies are your best friends for nights-in and rainy days.

Be sure to stock up, and have a wonderful, fantastic Eid, everyone!

A Monster Cookie

Don't you just love novelty items?

Now how about a personalised Sesame Street birthday party to relive that 80s favourite? And what better to complete it with a character cookie like this one?

A cookie of a Cookie Monster for a monster of cookies. Wouldn't that make for an awesome party?
The cookie itself is traditional English butter cookies, with a 4-inch diameter! You can opt for different sizes and shapes, though, to suit the sizes of your guests' hands.

Cookies also available in other characters for other TV shows, cartoon characters or fairytale princesses and ogres alike.

A Pinkish Kinda Day

There were two weddings; two hantaran trays needing two pink cakes. It was a heroic Unicorn to the rescue.

The first is a pink version of The Light Dreamer Cake. See here for the original vintage blue one.

And the other, The Peony. A very simple cake that exudes sophistication in its highest level.

Both of these are Swiss meringue buttercream based and holds well unchilled for a few hours, so whilst the elders discuss the details of the beautiful life you're about to build together, your cake can stay as pretty and presentable on its dulang for everyone to see.

A Spanish Princess

We made two very simply-decorated cakes this week; one, a princess cake for little 8-year-old Aina, then a basic red velvet with a blackboard paper banner for Mateo, a Spanish tutor.

Sorry the pictures are a bit funny looking, don't know what happened there and can't find the original anywhere! But, you get the idea...

Chocolate Chips and Friends

Two delectable desserts we love!

We had a little extra time on our hands, and due to our obsession with FRIENDS the series, this entry and the two goodness coming your way is dedicated to Joey Tribbiani. Hehehe.

Introducing, yummy buttery chocolate chip cake with a layer of Oreo's and topped with dark chocolate brownies. Comes in plain or covered in chocolate ganache.

And its counterpart, the Double Chocolate chip Cookie Dough Cake; two layers of moist chocolate cake sandwiching a thick dollop of chocolate chip cookie dough and French buttercream.
How you doin'?

Aris' 1st Mickey Mouse Birthday Party

It was a fun, sunshiny kinda happy day to celebrate Aris' 1st birthday and what better way to do it than with a smiling Mickey Mouse to make it even more joyous.

We made the two-tier cake to resemble a 3D Mickey, a candy and dessert table featuring cupcakes, love letters, marshmallow biscuits, gum drops, honey stars and the rest of the gang, all in the Mickey theme for  handsome baby Aris.

The cute lil' party packs, consisting of personalised bubbles, noisy blower, Mickey party hat, and candies and chocs were for the excited guests to take home and relive the special day.

We also booked a face-painter for Aris, by our vendor, Achik who had a trifle with painting all sorts of characters for the kids and adults!

Unicorn Finding 2 | Nikole Herriott and Herriot Grace

Stumbling upon a blog that has all sorts of beautiful things can make you anti-social, spending more than half a day clicking away. One such blog was none other than Nikole Herriott's, whose story is just, well, inspiringly (for lack of a better word) CUTE.

We'll let it speak for itself:

HERRIOTT GRACE is a venture of father and daughter, and this is their story.
Lance and Nikole Herriott live 3400 kilometers apart: his workshop is in Victoria, British Columbia, and her studio is in Toronto, Ontario. When she first made her home more than halfway across the country, they started to send packages back and forth.
In some of those packages, Lance began to include his own hand carved spoons. He had been collecting wood since the early seventies, and used his best pieces for these gifts. Nikole loved them; their balance and shape, the pieces were made with unmistakable care. She knew they were something special.
One day it dawned on her that others might appreciate her father’s talent as she did, so Nikole asked if he would ever want to share his work. Lance took a few days to think about it. And, after some convincing, he agreed to her plan, but only with people that understood and cared about the time and effort spent on each piece.
She told him, “Leave it to me, I know just the sort.”
And with that, Herriott Grace was born.
In the three years since, their small shop has grown to selling an array of hand carved and hand turned wooden objects, including spoons, bowls, pedestals, candy dishes, serving boards, rolling pins, plates and mortar and pestle sets. All are one of a kind and made entirely of salvaged, chemical-free wood, ranging in type, age, and origin. None are exactly the same, and thus none are perfect. But the slight imperfections are an affect of the handmade quality. They’ve also introduced a select line of exclusive porcelain dishware. The ceramic pieces are cast in small runs, and boast the rustic, tactile beauty for which their brand is known.
They also make, by hand, kitchen linens, cake flags, birthday candles, beeswax salve and cookie cutters.
Lance still lives in Victoria, and still sends packages to Nikole in Toronto. Now, she styles and photographs those pieces he sends, and together they are Herriott Grace.
Let's say it together now: awwwwww...

The blog is filled with awesome pictures of the sort of handmade items that makes Herriot Grace, and a recipe or two that'll just make you stock up on flour and eggs alike.

Here are just some of the enticingly attractive photos you'd find there:

Oh, and for you socially active peeps out there, add her on FBtwitter and instagram.

You'll see what we mean.

Unicorn Findings 1 | Photisserie

We've decided, just to make this blog just that much more interesting, and this may put you pinterest addicts out there in a right rut, that, we would do what we'd like to call our "Unicorn Finding" for rivetingly awesome blogs and websites for food and food design lovers out there.

And what better way to kick off with a blog by a food photographer enthusiast from Germany, Kathreinerle Koschitzki. Now, Kathrin, as she would fondly be called, makes everyday food items look incredibly magical.

And her recipes, my God, her recipes! Let's just say, if you aren't married, you'd want to be, just so you could make these delectable palate orgasms for your loved one.

You can find her blog here and her Facebook page here.

Now we know the blog's mostly in German, but food and photography is a universal language, and she  puts many of the recipes up twice, once in German, and again, translated into English. Isn't that lovely of her?

And here are some of the photos you'd find there:

Now, go make some European scrumpties (that's scrumtious yummies- yea we just made that up, but we're feeling a tad proud at the moment, so let us just have it, won't you? ;-)

Mini Cakes

Here are photos of the peach (inside and out!) mini cakes we made for our bride and groom's VIP table doorgift. They wanted it customised to suit their wedding colours and we added some edible pearls to the design to add elegance to the cakes. Inside, are peach cakes with vanilla French buttercream with fresh peach bits. Aren't they lovely?

Our First Wedding

So there was a wedding this weekend, and hey-ho, it was our first bride-groom client! We were mighty excited and made these for them. Weeee~

Here are the hantaran cupcakes. They're turquoise and purple with hints of silver to follow the wedding theme colours and they're inspired by traditional Malay wedding ornaments. We have the compulsory "Tepak Sireh" in the middle, escorted left and right by the traditional attire for Malay bride and groom. Then we have, below the Tepak Sireh, the groom's headgear or "Tanjak" and the traditional Malay weaponry, "Keris". The four damask designs bordering the rest of the cupcakes mimics a "Songket" design pattern up close.

Makes you want to get married everyday now, doesn't it?

The 2-tier wedding cake was a turquoise gradient rosette strawberry cake and a purple gradient ruffle cake, adorned with silver orchids.

The best part of the cake (as is many other things), is the 'soul': 4 layers of strawberry cake with whipped strawberry French cream (that tastes just like strawberry ice-cream!) and 4 layers of dark chocolate cake with Oreos cream cheese Swiss meringue buttercream.

Phew! That was a mouthful, oh, and, so is the cake!

Somewhere Over the Rainbow Cupcake

So we made rainbow cupcakes and tried it out with our new creamy French Buttercream and finished it. So we baked again and again, we finished it.

It took all the strength of a chilled marshmallow fondant not to gobble down the third batch.

Here are two of them, standing there looking so buttery, light, sweet, colourful, and oh-so-magical!

RM 4 each, they come in boxes of 16s. Love-urr-ly!

Beep, beep~

Hi there!
We had the privilege to host Uwais' Transportation themed birthday party last weekend, at Yu Kids Island at the Curve.

Here is a photo of the wonderful spread of Uwais' candy buffet:

Individually-wrapped mineral water bottles were part of the gift pack for guests to take home:

All cutleries, napkins, cups and placemats were also designed exclusively by us:

We also had fun themed framed signs all over the party, as well as hard hats, cones and toy trucks to complete the scene:

Food for the hungry ones were fried macaroni, mashed potatoes with bechamel sauce, sausages, nuggets, candies, chocolates, and more candies and chocolates!

And this, was the birthday cake. A whole tier of yummy chocolate cake with Oreo swiss meringue frosting in fondant.

We had so much fun! Can't wait for our next party! Beep, beep~
